Are you a nurse or healthcare professional thinking of taking your career overseas? Perhaps you want to gain more experience or you want to travel, working to fund your expedition? There are many pitfalls for the unsuspecting traveller, but Pinnacle International can help you avoid them all. Here is just some of the practical advice we offer our candidates in our no cost service to Healthcare professionals.
Shall I or Shan’t I?
When you are in the early stages of information gathering you need explicit, accurate information on which to base the decisions you make.
DO...
Ask these questions:
- Where can I travel to?
- How do I get professional registration in the country I want to visit?
- Do I need a medical or inoculations?
- Do I need to sit any exams? Will I have to pay for exams?
- Will I need to pay any fees to get registered? How much are they?
- How long can I stay?
- Will I need a work permit?
- If I need a work permit, who can I then work for?
- Will I need a criminal records check?
- Who will help me with my applications for jobs/registration/work permits?
- Will I have to pay for this service?
DO...
- Read any documents you are given thoroughly
- Look out for small print containing hidden charges
- Ask about the experience and financial stability of the company you are thinking of registering with
A job, a job, my kingdom for a job
You have decided on the country you want to go to, all you need now is a job to suit you.
DO...
- Think about what you want out of your new job- for example, experience in a world renowned centre of excellence or the flexibility to travel around the country in your time off.
- Be open minded about other options but consider each one carefully.
- Find out all you can about the local area or community. If you are using a company to find you a job, they should be able to give you all the information you need.
- Find out if there are other people who have travelled to the area you want to go to and ask to be put in touch with them.
All I want is a room somewhere...
When you have decided upon your job in the area and country of your choice, you need to start thinking about how you will get there, when you will go, what you need to take with you and where you will live.
DO...
- Find out about the weather in the country you are going to for the period of your stay and pack accordingly.
- Plan your flight to allow some breathing space before you start work.
- Keep active on the flight, move around as much as you can and exercise your calf muscles by pulling your foot up and then pushing it down, when you are seated.
- Avoid too much alcohol on the flight but do drink plenty of water and juices.
- Ask for a friendly face to meet you at the airport, it makes such a difference when you are tired and bewildered.
- Make sure you are told where you will be staying for at least the first night or two.
- Find out about what uniform you will need and when you can get one.
- Make sure you have appropriate footwear.
Above all, make sure you can relax and enjoy your last few days at home by registering with a company that is here to help nurses and healthcare professionals every step along the way of finding jobs and living abroad.
